2018 The Relationship between CO2 Emission and Economic Growth: Panel Data Analysis for the G20 Countries

Along with the globalization process, production activities of countries showed a rapid increase. The increase in production leads to economic growth by increasing real GDP. However, the increase in production causes global warming, one of the main problems of our time, and an increase in greenhouse gas emissions. To limit the effects of climate change and global warming, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have been limited within the framework of the Kyoto Protocol. In this way, it is desirable to reduce the effects of climate change and to limit greenhouse gas emissions. The Kuznets curriculum, which dealt with the relationship between income inequality and income per capita in the 1950s, was referred to as the Environmental Kuznets Curve (CZE) with the inclusion of environmental factors in the 1990s. The Environmental Kuznets Curve (CCP) is an indication that environmental damage will increase as economic growth increases and environmental damage will decline if a certain level of income is reached. The Environmental Kuznets Curve that looks like a reverse ‘U’, is designed to increase environmental pollution as income increases in less pre-industrial economies, and to reduce environmental pollution in post-industrial economies as well as income growth. Environmental Kuznets Increase in income after the turning point on the curve reduces environmental pollution. Thus, it is desirable to reduce the effects of climate change. In this context, the aim of this study is to examine the relationship between CO2 emissions and economic growth in G20 countries. In this context data from 2000-2014 were tested by panel data analysis. The LLC, IPS, Panel ADF and Panel PP tests were applied from the first generation panel unit root tests to determine the stability of the series. The ARDL model was established because the variables in the constructed unit root analysis were not stable at the same time. For this purpose, the relevant turnover data were tested by ARDL analysis and TodaYamamoto causality analysis. According to the result of this study, a longrun relationship between the variables has been established and a one-way causality from CO2 emission to economic growth has been found. There is no causal link between economic growth and CO2 emissions.
